Juan the Monkey

An Argentine monkey that grazed space

The story behind the official mascot of Argentina Space 2026, and the drawing contest that chose it.

Misiones, 1969

Before Argentina Space existed, there was already a pioneer. His name was Juan, and he was no ordinary astronaut: he was a capuchin monkey born in the jungle of Misiones. Small, curious, brave.

On December 23, 1969, just months after humans reached the Moon, Juan lifted off at 6:30 in the morning from the Chamical base in La Rioja, aboard the Canopus II sounding rocket. He travelled sedated but conscious, in a waterproof vest and a seat designed to withstand acceleration, inside a pressurised capsule named “Amanecer”, with oxygen for about 20 minutes.

It was a suborbital flight of some 8 minutes that reached close to 90 km of altitude, grazing the boundary between the atmosphere and space. And best of all: Juan came back safe and sound. With that flight Argentina became the fourth country in the world to send a living being to space and recover it, after the United States, the Soviet Union and France.

It was all part of the BIO Project of the CNIE (today CONAE), driven by aeronautical engineer Aldo Zeoli, considered one of the fathers of Argentine astronautics. After his flight, Juan lived about two more years at the Córdoba zoo. His story was recovered in the film Juan, el primer astronauta argentino, by Diego Julio Ludueña.

Two categories

Category A

Explorers · 6 to 12 years old

The youngest take off with all their imagination. We looked for creativity, colour and the drive to tell Juan's adventure their own way.

Category B

Cadets · 13 to 17 years old

Teenagers fly higher with technique and concept. We valued the personal vision, command of the medium and the strength of the idea.

The prize

A drawing tablet for the winner of each category, so the next piece is born digital. 2 tablets, one per category.

The rules the contest ran under, as published.

01Organization

The contest is organized by Argentina Space, an initiative of Shamana S.R.L. (the “Organizer”). Participation is entirely free and open, not conditioned on purchasing any product or contracting any service.

02Territory, participation and categories

Open to minors habitually resident in any Latin American country, with the legal validity of the contest governed exclusively by the law in force in the Argentine Republic. Two categories by age at the start of the contest: Explorers (6 to 12 inclusive) and Cadets (13 to 17 inclusive). Entries had to be submitted and expressly authorised by the minor's mother, father or legal guardian. Physical prizes are limited to participants legally resident in Argentina; if a winning entry comes from a participant resident abroad, they receive the institutional recognition and digital diploma, and the physical prize passes to the next in order of merit.

03Mandatory theme: official mascot design

The subject of the contest is the creation and design of the official mascot of Argentina Space 2026, inspired mandatorily and exclusively by the historical figure of “Juan the Monkey”. Every entry had to focus on the character (physiognomy, spacesuit, expression and personality), without complex landscapes, comics or scenes from the flight. Presenting the character full-body was recommended, though not required, to ease digitisation.

04Requirements of the artwork

A maximum of one (1) entry per participant. The drawing had to be strictly original and unpublished, authored by the minor, never previously awarded or published. Technique was entirely free (pencil, watercolour, oil, acrylic, collage, digital illustration), as long as the result could be digitised.

05Submission format and channel

Entries were received only in digital form through Google Forms. Accepted formats: JPG, JPEG or PNG. Maximum file size: 10 MB. Recommended resolution: the minimum quality that guarantees visual sharpness for the jury's assessment. Technical enquiries: marketing@argentinaspace.com.

06Submission period

The reception period ran from Monday, June 15, 2026 to Friday, July 10, 2026 at 18:00 (official Argentine time). No submissions, changes or file replacements were accepted after the deadline.

07Selection and jury

Entries are assessed by a selection committee appointed by the Argentina Space organization, with particular attention to the originality and charisma of the character, and to its institutional versatility to work in digital formats across the event's activities, social channels and communication pieces. The committee's decision is final.

08Prizes

One main prize per category, consisting of one (1) tablet suited to developing and stimulating artistic skills. Prizes are not exchangeable for cash, credit or any other goods.

09Announcement of winners

The names of the winners in each category, along with their works, are announced publicly through Argentina Space's official platforms and channels. The Organizer also notifies the responsible adult directly at the email address given in the form.

10Intellectual property and exhibition rights

By taking part, the responsible adults grant Argentina Space a free, non-exclusive licence for institutional, non-profit dissemination purposes to reproduce, publish, exhibit and share the works, associating them with the author's first name, surname and age. Any public exhibition preserves the attribution required by Argentine Intellectual Property Law 11.723.

11Personal data (Law 25.326)

Data collected through the form is treated with absolute confidentiality and for the sole purpose of running the contest. Submission by the responsible adult implies free, express and informed consent. Data is not used for commercial purposes, third-party advertising or database sales, and is kept only for as long as needed to run the contest, deliver prizes and exhibit the works. To access, rectify, update or delete data: marketing@argentinaspace.com.

12Acceptance of the terms

Participation presupposes full knowledge, understanding and unconditional acceptance of all the clauses. Any unforeseen situation or interpretive ambiguity is resolved exclusively by the Organizer.
