1. Space Force distributes $562.5 million across 11 space technology companies
SpaceWERX, the U.S. Space Force's innovation arm, announced its Program Year 2026.1 STRATFI (Strategic Funding Increase) selections on August 20 at the Fed Supernova event in Austin, Texas. These are 11 agreements combining public and private capital for an estimated total of $562.5 million, aimed at moving space technologies from prototype to operational use. The selected companies are Agile Space Industries, Antares Nuclear, EO Solutions, Hydrosat, KMI Space, Method Security, Muon Space, Scout Space, Sedaro, Star Catcher Industries and ThinkOrbital. STRATFI is designed precisely to bridge the so-called "valley of death": the stage where a technology already works in the lab but does not yet have a contract at scale to sustain it. 2. Muon Space closes a $250 million Series C at a $1.5 billion valuation
On August 20, California-based Muon Space announced the close of a heavily oversubscribed $250 million Series C, led by Eclipse Capital with participation from Galvanize, Google, Salesforce Ventures, Wellington Management, I Squared Capital and Woven Capital, alongside existing investors including Radical Ventures, Congruent Ventures and Costanoa Ventures. The deal brings the company's total equity raised to more than $386 million and, according to sources cited by Bloomberg, values it at $1.5 billion. The use of funds is industrial: Muon recently opened a San Jose facility designed to build up to 500 satellites per year by 2027, a tenfold expansion over its previous capacity. 3. Starcloud raises $250 million to put data centers in orbit, with Nvidia investing
Starcloud, founded in 2024 and headquartered in Redmond, Washington, announced on August 21 a Series A extension of $250 million at a $2.3 billion post-money valuation. The round was led by Manhattan West and brought in new investors including Nvidia, Cisco Investments, Cedar Capital, Goanna Capital and Standard Capital, alongside existing backers Benchmark, EQT, Soma, NFX and 776. Total capital raised now stands at $450 million. The plan: a constellation of satellites operating as orbital data centers powered by Nvidia's next-generation AI chips. The money goes toward a new 100,000-square-foot facility in Woodinville to build Starcloud-3, its largest spacecraft, intended to fly on SpaceX's Starship. 4. Argentina: CONAE brought satellite data to the crop insurance business
On Friday, August 21, as part of the 34th Annual Assessors Conference of La Segunda Seguros, Argentina's National Space Activities Commission hosted more than 60 agricultural engineers from Chaco, Santa Fe, Entre Ríos, Córdoba, Buenos Aires, La Pampa and Río Negro at the Teófilo Tabanera Space Center (CETT) in Córdoba. The group toured the Integration and Testing Laboratory, the Antenna Park and the SAOCOM Mission Control Center, and attended sessions on concrete applications: the GenBiMo project — an "agricultural digital shadow" combining satellite data, IoT and artificial intelligence to predict crop yields — SAOCOM mission products (Soil Moisture Map, Interannual Yield Variation Map), agro-climatic emergency management with nearly 400 activations handled for events such as frosts, severe storms and heat sources, and the use of vegetation and temperature indices to price risk in the insurance market. 5. SpaceX passed 100 orbital missions this year and exceeds 11,000 Starlink satellites
Launch cadence was news in its own right again. On August 21 SpaceX completed its 100th orbital mission of 2026 with the Starlink 15-20 flight from Vandenberg. On August 24 the Starlink 10-49 mission flew from Cape Canaveral on a Falcon 9 booster making its record-setting 37th flight. On August 25 it added another 27 Starlink satellites from Vandenberg. Days earlier the company had surpassed 11,000 Starlink satellites in low Earth orbit, and the August 20 launch included the 2,000th Starlink satellite placed in orbit so far this year. For the industry, the relevant point is not the record itself but what it implies: the marginal cost of putting mass in orbit keeps falling, and that redefines which business models are viable. 6. Investment in satellite companies already broke the annual record in the first half
According to Space Capital's quarterly report, investment in satellite companies reached $8.1 billion in the first half of 2026, already surpassing every previous annual total the firm has tracked. Finnish operator Iceye led the ranking with a $1.2 billion Series F aimed at expanding radar-imaging satellite production amid NATO backlogs. In the broader "infrastructure" category — covering the design, manufacture, launch and operation of space-based assets — companies raised a quarterly record of $20.7 billion. 7. LandSpace becomes the first private Chinese company to land an orbital-class rocket
On August 19, Chinese company LandSpace recovered the booster of its ZhuQue-3 rocket, marking the first landing of an orbital-class rocket by a Chinese commercial company and also the first landing of a Chinese-built rocket using landing legs. It is a milestone that breaks the de facto monopoly SpaceX held over orbital reusability and points to cost competition in the Asian launch market. 8. China postpones the launch of Chang'e-7, its most ambitious lunar south pole mission
On August 23 China announced the postponement of Chang'e-7, the mission that was due to lift off within days from the Wenchang launch site on Hainan Island. The agency said the mission "does not meet launch conditions" and cannot take place within the window planned for this year, following a "comprehensive assessment" based on principles of prudence and reliability. The presence of Typhoon Narra in the area appears to have closed an already narrow window. Chang'e-7 consists of an orbiter and a lander that would target the rim of Shackleton Crater, near the lunar south pole, to explore permanently shadowed craters and survey resources — water ice in particular. 9. From Chile, astronomers detect S301, the fastest known star in the Milky Way
An international team discovered the fastest star ever recorded in our galaxy using the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) at ESO's Paranal Observatory in northern Chile and its GRAVITY+ instrument. Named S301, it orbits the supermassive black hole Sagittarius A* in just 8.7 years and, at its closest approach, passes at only 12 times the Earth-Sun distance, traveling at 25,000 kilometers per second: 8% of the speed of light, roughly 100,000 times faster than a commercial airliner. The finding, published in Nature and announced on August 22, opens a concrete possibility: by observing two complete orbits, the team expects to achieve within the next decade the first direct measurement of a black hole's spin, a fine-grained test of Einstein's general relativity. Its orbital properties suggest S301 was part of a binary system torn apart by Sagittarius A*, which captured one star and ejected the other out of the galaxy. Its next close passage will be in 2031. The scientific leadership sits at the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics, but the observation was made possible by the astronomical infrastructure installed on Latin American soil, today the most powerful in the world at optical and infrared wavelengths. 10. The Nancy Grace Roman telescope, ready to lift off on August 30
NASA confirmed on August 26 that the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope has been encapsulated inside a Falcon Heavy fairing and certified for the final pre-launch work, with liftoff set for Sunday, August 30 at 7:26 a.m. EDT from Launch Complex 39A at Kennedy Space Center, with a backup opportunity on the 31st. Roman carries a 2.4-meter primary mirror — the same size as Hubble's — but its Wide-Field Instrument is a 300.8-megapixel camera capable of covering, at Hubble-quality sharpness, a patch of sky roughly 100 times wider than Hubble's infrared camera. It will take about 30 days to reach the Sun-Earth L2 Lagrange point, 1.5 million kilometers away. 11. The Artemis II crew receives the Congressional Space Medal of Honor
NASA announced that the four Artemis II crew members — astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover and Christina Koch, and Canada's Jeremy Hansen of the CSA — will receive the Congressional Space Medal of Honor at a ceremony on Friday, August 28 at 11 a.m. EDT at Johnson Space Center in Houston. The award recognizes the ten-day mission around the Moon that concluded on April 10, 2026: they were the first humans to travel beyond the Moon in more than 50 years and, at 406,700 kilometers (252,756 miles) from Earth at their farthest point, set the record for the greatest distance humans have traveled in space. It was also the first crewed flight of the Orion spacecraft.
